~Yokohama in Bakumatsu, seen by the first Swiss watchmaker~
A sole agent of Girard-Perregux, Sowind Japan K.K. is currently holding “Francois Perregaux Exhibition ~Yokohama in Bakumatsu, seen by the first Swiss watchmaker” from December 19th to 24th at YCC Yokohama Creativecity Center.
Girard-Perregaux, based in La Chaux-de-Fonds since 1791, found a potential for expansion of Japanese market before the conclusion of the friendship and trade treaty between Switzerland and Japan, and dispatched a Swiss watchmaker of the founders, Francois Perregaux, to Japan , and he set foot on Yokohama in 1860.
In this exhibition, historical materials owned by Girard-Perregaux, such as “Girard-Perregaux pocket watches” that Francois Perregaux brought from Switzerland at that time and sold in Japan, or “folk arts and living wares” owned by both International Museum of Horology, La Chaux-de-Fonds, and Musée d'ethnographie, Neuchâtel, that Francois Perregaux obtained in Japan and sent to Switzerland, can be found, by looking back to the period from Bakumatsu to Meiji.
Moreover, the panels entitled “ Aimé Humbert mission which established the foundation for Swiss watch in Japan” produced by FH Tokyo are also exhibited to introduce historical relationship between Swiss watches and Japan at the period of Bakumatsu.
